A call comes in while your crew is on a roof, in a crawl space or on the road. Nobody picks up. The caller does not leave a message. They dial the next company on the list.
You never see this loss. It does not show up on an invoice or in a report, so it is easy to treat it as zero. It is not zero. It is the gap between the calls you get and the jobs you book.
How to estimate it
You do not need perfect data. Start with three numbers: how many calls you miss in a typical week, how many of those callers would have booked if someone had answered, and what a typical job is worth.
Assumes every missed call is answered. Math from your inputs only. An estimate, not a forecast or a promise.
Treat the result as the rough size of the problem, not a forecast. Your real numbers will differ. Some callers are wrong numbers, some only want a price and some would never have booked.
What to do with the number
If the number is small, fix nothing. Your time is better spent elsewhere. If it is large, the next question is how to answer faster without hiring a full-time receptionist. The options are a text-back, a voice agent or an answering service. Each has trade-offs, and the right one depends on how your calls actually go.
Sorting that out is part of what the assessment does.
